MAKING YOUR MARK: KICKING CANCER
A kickball league rallies to raise money to fight cancer and to inspire a member who’s kicked cancer three times
(WVEC, Hampton, VA) — It’s a unique way to raise money for Relay for Life in the fight against cancer. They do it, by putting their best foot forward. The World Adult Kickball Association (WAKA) in Hampton, held its third annual Kick Cancer fundraising tournament last Saturday. Perhaps no one was more appreciative than Nikki Nicole, a player in the league who’s also a 3-time cancer survivor. “I’ve had cervical cancer twice, stomach cancer once, and it just sucks that there’s no cure for this disease,” Nikki said. On the positive side, Nikki has gained enormous support in her battles with cancer thanks to her league.

It’s another early evening, and after 90-plus minutes of pick-up soccer, the camaraderie and beer flow faster and more smoothly than the action.

GET YOUR KICKS
Adult kickball league combines childhood game with grown-up socializing.
(June 10, 2014 | Albany, NY) We all remember those days after school when all of the neighborhood kids would meet up in the lot beyond the dull apartment complexes and an old raggedy fence. Nobody had any special talents, but who needed them? The ball was friendly. Soft, red rubber. It made a satisfying “boing” sound when kicked. The game always started where it left off as if it never stopped. Every kid was a player when it came to kickball. Now, years later, adults are picking up the game again.
