There’s nothing better than those occasional, intense back-and-forth bits between two volleyball teams that lasts a good minute or more. And, while it’s happening, you’re on pins and needles, doing everything in your power to avoid being the person who “drops the ball.” Literally and metaphorically. However, even when the ball finally does land, it doesn’t matter which team got the point. Everyone agrees what just took place was just plain awesome. Even your body. Why’s that? Because while playing Volleyball, you also do these 5 things — some taking place behind the scenes.

PLAYING VOLLEYBALL IMPROVES HAND-EYE COORDINATION

Whether serving or attacking, your hand-eye coordination is getting a workout and some outstanding practice. On a serve, your eye must stay on that ball, so the palm of your hand can hit it in just the right spot. Bumping means zeroing on the ball and a setter to hand it off to at the same time. On defense, getting to the ball too early or too late can be detrimental to the game. Your hand-eye coordination is working the entire time you’re playing Volleyball.

PLAYING VOLLEYBALL MEANS WORKING TOWARD A COMMON GOAL

Every time you or another plays yells “help” or “got it” you’re doing more than just participating in Volleyball.  You’re learning how to work toward a common goal.  Sure, the goal is winning.  Because that ball can end up anywhere on that court, each player is important.   The symptoms of working toward a common goal in this way, show up in other areas of life including work.  In fact, you might be the poster person at your job for “team player” due to Volleyball.

BURN CALORIES

You’d swear that even the ball must be sweating after a few games of Volleyball. No part of your body gets to sit on the sideline in Volleyball. The number of calories you’ll burn will undoubtedly depend on the intensity each player or team brings to the court. The more competitive the play, the more calories you’ll shed. The average person can expect to burn anywhere from 430 to 6oo per hour while playing Volleyball.

YOU MAKE YOURSELF FEEL GOOD WHEN PLAYING VOLLEYBALL

If you want to feel good, then playing volleyball is the way to go.  First, if you’re playing volleyball then you are also exercising.  Exercising releases chemicals such as endorphins, serotonin, and dopamine which all boost your sense of well-being because those chemicals suppress anxiety and depression.  But chemicals inside your body are only half of the equation.

If you took two people from the same team out of the mix on the volleyball court, the job of the remaining players will become extremely harder.  Much harder.  Each person on that court is valuable and needed.  Volleyball is a sport in which both you and the other teammates recognize your value.  When you feel valuable, you feel better about yourself.  The next time you’re playing volleyball, think about this: you’ll be helping out your brain, your body, and your soul.

YOU IMPROVE YOUR APPEARANCE

Close your eyes for a minute and imagine each of your interactions with the ball while playing volleyball.  Maybe you’re serving, bumping, or digging.  Now think about what your body looks like and the movements it has made in each of those instances.  When you’re playing volleyball you are toning various parts of your body but especially your upper body and arms.  Play enough and you’ll notice a difference and start to look better.  When you look better and people notice, your confidence also gets a boost.

Now, put it all together.  When you’re playing volleyball you’re feeling good about yourself because you’re exercising.  In the process of doing that, you’re toning your upper body and burning calories.  You’re improving your flexibility, hand-eye coordination, and other motor skills.  You’re also working toward a common goal and being a team player which can help you advance other areas of your life.  Lastly, you’re improving your confidence and communication.  “Got it!”  Good!  Now, if you want to play, click below to find a league near you.
